Welcome!

Every night I go to bed, I have thoughts swirling in my head. Things to do. Scrapbook pages I want to create. Gifts I want to make. Skills I want to learn. And, of course, daily happenings that I don't want to forget, but invariably will by tomorrow morning, only to pop up in a random thought weeks down the road. So, here I am. I may use this blog daily to empty my head and heart before cuddling up in my duvet, or as it may be, I may write in it once a month. Who knows. It is for me, but perhaps something I write or learn may spark a fire in someone else. Perhaps it may quiet a mind or make you feel like you are not alone out there. It is for me. But perhaps it is for you.

The spaces in-between...

I first came across this poem in my Literacy course and made so many connections to my teaching, and the balance between teaching and home life. As I sit here, in a quiet moment after dropping Kai off at daycare and before errands begin, the words come back to me:

Fire

What makes a fire burn
is a space between the logs,
a breathing space.
Too much of a good thing,
too many logs
packed in too tight
can douse the falmes
almost as surely
as a pail of water would.

So building fires
requires attention
to the spaces in between,
as much as to the wood.

When we are able to build
open spaces
in the same way
we have learned
to pile on the logs,
then we can come to see how
it is fuel, and absence of the fuel
together, that make fire possible.

We only need to lay a log
lightly from time to time.
A fire
grows
simply because the space is there,
with openings
in which the flame
that knows just how it wants to burn
can find its way.

-Judy Brown

Although it is not January and it is not the traditional time to set New Year's resolutions, I am going to do just that right now.  I will take more time to find and enjoy the spaces in between.  I hope you can do the same.

  1. I always loved this poem even though I have always had trouble with the "spaces" and now that I'm getting older (even faster than before) I want the spaces filled even more. BUT. . now I want the spaces filled with quiet things that I enjoy learning. I see so much of myself in your post, especially the part about learning new things and loving new beginnings. I have SEVERAL journals upstairs with only a few pages filled because I just love new journals! So, I will read with interest how you take time to slow down in your busy wife/mommy/teacher/student/reader/scrapbooker/knitter/journalling/blogging day. Can't wait to see what's coming:0

  3. I love the poem Christine. It reminds me of the silence in the music as well. After all, that brings together the beauty of a song. Thanks for the reminder. It came at a good time. Kim xo
